BAE Systems is my first internship with a large company, and it has been an invaluable learning experience.

I was unsure of what to expect going into my first internship, especially working remotely as a Project Management Office Intern. I wondered how working remotely would impact whether or not I would get the full internship experience. Thankfully, my time with BAE Systems has far exceeded my expectations. I’ve learned so much about personal responsibility, communication, adaptability, and how to succeed while working remotely.

Working completely remote was initially intimidating. However, after the first meeting I attended, I felt beyond welcomed, and everyone I worked with was helpful during my onboarding process. Everyone was more than happy to assist me or answer any questions I had. Though I did not get the traditional “in office” experience, I learned the importance of personal responsibility and holding myself accountable. BAE Systems has given me the opportunity to take on many projects and tasks and work independently, all while receiving advice and feedback along the way. It has been an incredible hands-on experience.

My virtual communication skills have improved significantly while interning remotely. I’ve learned that utilizing emails, video chats, and Skype messages are essential in ensuring successful communication. With many of the tasks and projects I’ve been assigned, I’ve been able to schedule quick video meetings with a wide variety of individuals at BAE Systems and gain a variety of perspectives, which has helped create a personable experience for me, even while working virtually.

One of the best parts of virtual meetings is the unofficial dress code: business on top, casual on bottom.

LEAP (which stands for: learn, engage, apply and progress), is the internship program at BAE Systems. While working at BAE Systems, I’ve gotten the opportunity to serve as a LEAP Leader, where I am responsible for coordinating and connecting interns across the sector through planning and implementing activities. As LEAP Leaders, we have gotten very creative with team-building while working remotely, and have hosted events such as: virtual coffees, get-to-know you games, and a competitive game of jeopardy.

BAE Systems has such a dynamic environment, and there is so much room for personal growth. I’ve gotten the opportunity to collaborate with so many different groups. For example, I’ve been able to facilitate meetings within the project management community and work with BAE System’s project launch team while taking the lead on many tasks.

Here are my quick tips for having a successful experience while working remotely:

1. Create a daily routine for yourself.

2. Take notes during meetings and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You’re sure to come across terms, projects, people and acronyms you’re not familiar with.

3. Attend as many virtual events as you can, it’s a great way to engage with others and make connections.

4. Create a working environment with minimal distractions and make it your own. Essential oils, candles, plants, and inspirational quotes have all become staples at my working desk.

5. Remember to take a break to get up and move or add in a quick stretch. I’ve found doing yoga a few times a week has been extremely beneficial.
