LEAP into an internship or co-op with purpose

Get involved with the
BAE Systems Intern Remote Sensing Team (BIRST)
The BAE Systems Intern Remote Sensing Team (BIRST) is an after-hours program that provides the Space & Mission Systems sector summer LEAP interns the opportunity to experience the full concept-to-launch program life cycle. Interns design, construct, test, and fly payloads on a variety of flight platforms during their summer internship.

This opportunity allows interns to work on skills they might not have a chance to learn otherwise during their 10-week internship. It is not uncommon to see a finance intern soldering or a mechanical engineering intern writing code for their payload.

LEAP internship frequently asked questions

Our portfolio is wide-ranging, meaning every person’s experience is slightly different.

LEAP participants support many functions, including, but not limited to: engineering, procurement, manufacturing, operations, supply chain, business development, finance, communications, marketing, and human resources.

Previous projects have been:
  • Assisting in the design of combat vehicles or marine vessel components. 
  • Applying programing knowledge in support of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, aerospace, or electric systems initiatives. 
  • Helping to streamline operational processes to meet missioncritical deadlines. 
  • Working in business functions in order to secure a future commercial or government contract; or carryout an existing one.

LEAP internships and co-ops are available year round. Most interns typically join us in during the summer months of May through August.

Based on the influx of interns, this is when we plan our core LEAP programming including networking and mentoring sessions, soft-skill development workshops, early-career advice panels, fireside chats with company leadership, and our National Intern Day celebration.

No matter when someone participates in LEAP, they will earn valuable work experience, develop a reliable network of colleagues, and gain business exposure at a leading aerospace, defense, and security company.

We attend college career fairs during the spring and fall. 

​​​​​We pride ourselves in providing a flexible internship experience.

We have full-time on-site, remote, and hybrid opportunities. Where someone works from depends on their job responsibilities. Some LEAP Program participants will have the option to work on a 9/80 schedule, which allows for every other Friday off.

Our Leadership Development Programs (LDPs) are designed for high-potential early-career professionals determined to become the leaders of tomorrow. Applications for the LDP open in August and typically run through September, with programs beginning the following June. We have opportunities in the following functions:

Gain diverse work experience
LDPs typically consist of three, one-year full-time rotations across different locations nationwide. Rotations are designed to provide a varied set of experiences and connections within your discipline.

Expand your knowledge
LDP participants are encouraged to  complete a graduate degree during their time in the program. We will provide tuition assistance, on the condition the degree is applicable to the business. ​

Grow professionally
With customized mentorship and networking opportunities, chances to travel, attend conferences, receive technical training and more, the LDP provides a true foundation for a successful career.
